How to: Save Money On Your Energy Bill This Winter

As you’re probably well aware (and if you’re not just step outside), June and July are the coldest months in Australia, and August is only marginally better. For most of the states things don’t start to warm up again until September! So unless you’re a northerner (who have their own weather issues to deal with) there’s a fair chance you’re battling through this chilling time of the year by cranking up the trusty heater.

While this may things more bearable temperature wise, there’s a fair chance it’ll result in an unbearable energy bill; plus a bigger impact on the environment. So, we thought it’d be a good idea to offer up some simple and easy to follow tips on how to save some energy this winter:

  • On sunny days in winter, open up the house to the north and west to let the sun’s warmth in
  • Make sure your house is well insulated. Seal gaps around doors and windows, and cover windows with thick curtains or drapes
  • Move your heaters away from the windows to avoid unnecessary heat loss
  • Before cranking the heater up, think about putting on another layer of clothing instead
  • Remember to turn your heating off before you leave the house and turn it off or down to low before you hit the hay
  • Close doors between heated and unheated areas to keep the warmth in the heated area
  • Check that your heating appliances are operating efficiently. If you’re in doubt, have them serviced, as they may be using energy more energy then necessary

Keep these tips in mind and you’re bound to shave some dollars off your winter energy bill.

good advice Dan. I also had a weather issues… I can’t stand winters.. Anyway, also I would like to give you a tip also. Why not used energy saving capacitor ? According to one site I read, “capacitors is an electrical device that stores energy in an electrical field between two conductors, such as two plates of metal. People referring to or searching for ‘energy saving capacitor’ are usually referring to a device consisting of one or more capacitors, which attempts to average out the irregular pattern of energy use by inductive loads such as electric motors, to cut down on the amount of electricity you get billed for”.
