Indigo 4.1 Frequently Asked Questions
Below are frequently asked questions for the Australian edition of Indigo 4.1, the leading X10 Mac software;
General
Which version of Indigo 4.1, Lite or Pro, should I buy?
It really depends on your needs.
If you are new to Home Automation and have only a few (20 or less) devices, you should try out Indigo 4.1 Lite.
If you want to control an unlimited number of X10 home automation devices, high-end devices (thermostats, sprinklers, multiple I/O devices), or to integrate Indigo 4.1 with other software applications (such as Apple iTunes), or have complex automation requirements, you'll benefit want the full power of Indigo 4.1 Pro.
We recommend that you read about Indigo 4.1's features and the version comparison chart so you can make the right decision for you and your house.
Can I upgrade between Indigo 4.1, Lite or Pro?
Yes, if you purchase Lite and later decide to upgrade to Pro, you can purchase a Pro upgrade code that will unlock the Pro features in your current installation. Best of all, no new installation or reconfiguration will be necessary.
Does Indigo have a Web interface for controlling my house remotely from another computer or an iPhone?
Yes, Indigo 4.1 includes a built-in Web server that will allow you to fully control your X10 home automation system.
Indigo Pro also provides easy-to-create graphical Control Pages.
For an added level of control you can also download the native Indigo 4.1 iPhone and iPod touch application, available for free in the iTunes App Store.
Installation
Do I have to leave my Mac on all the time to use Indigo?
Yes, you do. Because of Mac's communication capabilities with X10, Indigo cannot upload commands to a computer controller. SmartHome.com.au is hoping that future hardware updates will allow us to work around the limitation. However, at present even if your Mac is turned off you'll still be able to access and control your X10 home automation system.
Can I run Indigo Server under a non-administrator OS X user account?
The default installation of the Indigo Server requires that the admin OS X user account under which it was installed be logged in and running. However, it is possible to run the Indigo Server under other user accounts with some file/folder permission changes.
Is it possible to run the Indigo Server as a daemon before any users are logged in?
It is possible to run the Indigo Server before any OS X user account is logged in. There are limitations, however, to launching Indigo Server in this fashion. For example, AppleScript support will be disabled.
Another option is to setup a separate user account that runs Indigo. Then, with fast user switching, you can switch between individual user accounts while keeping the Indigo-specific account (and Indigo Server) running in the background.
Hardware
Does Indigo support Insteon?
Though not currently available to Australia or New Zealand, Indigo 4.1 has built in support for Insteon home automation technology; it's just one element of it's great future proof features.
Does Indigo support UPB or Z-Wave home automation hardware?
At present no, though the system's developers have stated that both UPB and Z-Wave may be available in future releases.
