There are those Z~Series devices that work for you, turning things in your home on and off to afford you perfect comfort and convenience. And then there are those devices which sit at the heart of Z~Series, providing you with the intelligence that allows your Z~Series home to beckon to your every whim. The home control server is one of them, and now the Z~Series door / window sensor joins it as the first product in our dedicated Intelligence range.
How they work
In essence, the door / window sensor is a magnetic switch designed to tell your Z~Series network if the object that it's placed on is open or closed, and when that changes. Of course, we call it a door / window sensor, but its compact design and adaptable nature means that it can be placed on almost any two adjoining surfaces that separate. As such, the door / window sensor is a communicator, providing information to your Z~Series network so that it can make intelligent decision that compliment and enhance the way you live.
And as a communicator it can speak with different parts of your Z~Series network. If Z~Series operates in your home through the home server the door / window sensor will provide information directly back to it, allowing the server to determine what to do with the information. If, however, you're running a smaller installation without a server the door / window sensor will be able to communicate through a mini-remote control direct to your Z~Series controllers.

Potential solutions
Because each door / window sensor provides your Z~Series home with a heightened layer of intelligence, how you'll opt to use them in your own home will come down to a lot of personal decisions. We have, however, had several common solutions asked of us by Z~Series home owners; should you want to know how the door / window sensor might suit your own home feel free to ask.
Garage Door
You car pulls up to your garage, you press a button on a remote and the door lifts. But it's late at night and the garage is lit only by your headlights. Not so with a Z~Series door / window sensor attached to the door; as the garage door lifts the garage lights turn on for a timed period, letting you leave the garage and approach your home. And as you do you'll notice that its lights are already on, welcoming you. The door / window sensor knows you're home, and Z~Series has changed things to precisely how you want them - and all you had to do was press the same button you've always pressed to open your garage door.
Entrances
Just as it can with the garage door, the door / window sensor can affix to your home's entrance doorways allowing the Z~Series network to make your home precisely as you want it from the moment you open the door. Taking into account the details that matter, such as the time of day or day of the week, the door / window sensor will be able to provide the intelligence to your network to adjust your home's lighting to just how you like it and to also turn on those devices you'll want. Morning tea time? Your espresso machine is already heating up. Later and the middle of winter? Your electric blanket is already warming up.
Bathroom
Getting up to use the lavatory in the middle of the night can involve a lot of fumbling and blinding lights. Not so with the door / window sensor. Placed on a lavatory door and coupled with the home server, it'll know when your lavatory is in use turning on the lights, and any fans, for you convenience. Naturally, it'll also know it's the middle of the night so it won't simply turn the lights on, but turn them on at the perfect level, say 40%, so the light's won't hurt your eyes. And when you're done, it'll turn it all back off again.

As a part of Z~Series' home control solution, the door / window sensor is powered by Z-Wave. Using Z-Wave's wireless communication, your Z~Series home will be able to use the intelligent information provided to it by the door / window sensor to create a home with a perfect level of automation and scheduling.
