How to factory reset Sonoff devices
Factory resetting a Sonoff device removes its current pairing information and returns it to setup mode. This is useful if the device will not pair, has been connected to a different hub, or needs to be added to a new smart home system.
This guide covers general factory reset steps for Sonoff Zigbee devices and Sonoff Matter devices.
Before you start
A factory reset will usually remove the device from its current smart home network.
Before resetting, we recommend:
- Deleting the device from your current app or hub first, if possible
- Keeping the device powered on during the reset
- Having your Zigbee hub, Matter controller, or app ready to add the device again
- Checking the product manual if your device has a special reset method
Most Sonoff devices reset by holding the device button for around 5 seconds, but some models may vary.
Factory resetting Sonoff Zigbee devices
Most Sonoff Zigbee devices can be factory reset by holding the pairing/reset button.
General Zigbee reset method
- Make sure the device has power.
- Locate the pairing or reset button on the device.
- Press and hold the button for around 5 seconds.
- Release the button when the LED starts flashing.
- The device should now be reset and ready to pair again.
For many Sonoff Zigbee sensors, the LED will flash slowly after reset and remain in pairing mode for a limited time. For example, some Sonoff Zigbee sensors show pairing mode for around 180 seconds.
Factory resetting Sonoff Matter devices
SONOFF Matter devices are generally reset in a similar way to Zigbee devices, but the LED pattern is usually slightly different.
General Matter reset method
- Make sure the Matter device is powered on.
- Locate the pairing/reset button.
- Press and hold the button for around 5 seconds.
- Release the button when the LED changes to pairing mode.
- The device is ready to be added again using Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or another Matter-compatible platform.
For Sonoff Matter devices, pairing mode is commonly shown by an LED pattern of two short flashes and one long flash. SONOFF’s Matter setup guide states that for non-first use, holding the pairing button for about 5 seconds puts the device back into pairing mode with this LED pattern.
Removing a Sonoff Matter device from an existing platform
If the Matter device was already added to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another Matter platform, remove it from that platform first if possible.
This helps prevent the device from staying linked to an old Matter fabric or ecosystem.
General steps:
- Open the smart home app where the device is currently connected.
- Find the device settings.
- Choose Remove Device, Delete Device, or Unpair.
- Then perform the physical reset on the SONOFF device.
- Add the device again using the Matter setup code or QR code.
Sonoff also recommends resetting Matter devices to factory settings and trying again if pairing fails.
Important safety note for wired devices
If the Sonoff device is connected to mains voltage, do not remove covers, access wiring or handle terminals – only qualified electricians should handle 240V powered devices.
