How to set up Home Assistant Green

A quick step-by-step first setup guide for Home Assistant Green.

What you need:

  • Home Assistant Green

  • Ethernet cable (supplied)

  • Power supply (supplied)

  • A smartphone (Home Assistant app) or a computer (web browser)

Home Assistant Green is plug-and-play and comes with Home Assistant software already installed.

1: Plug it in (power + network)

Getting started is easy…

    1. Connect the Ethernet cable from your router / network switch to Home Assistant Green.
    2. Plug in power.
    3. Wait a few minutes for first boot.

LED check (quick sanity check):

    • White LED = power is on.

    • Yellow LED blinking in a slow “heartbeat” pattern usually means Home Assistant OS is running.

2: Open Home Assistant interface

Method A: Using a computer (web browser)

If that doesn’t load, use Method C below (find the IP).

Method B: Using the Home Assistant mobile app

    • Install and open the Home Assistant app, then select your server when it’s detected (it often shows the device’s IP like http://192.168.1.196:8123).

If that doesn’t work, use Method C below via a web browser on your computer.

Method C: Use the IP address directly

Log into your router and view your connected devices, look for any device that includes “Home Assistant” / “Green” in the name and note the IP address, then open:

    • http://<IP_ADDRESS>:8123 (example: http://192.168.1.50:8123)

3: Complete onboarding (first-time setup)

When the page loads, Home Assistant will walk you through onboarding (create your account + basics). The official onboarding flow starts at http://homeassistant.local:8123/.

Follow the on-screen instructions… typical steps include:

    • Create an owner account
    • Set name / location / time zone
    • Review auto-discovered devices on your network

4: Add devices & integrations

It’s time to setup some devices:

    • Go to Settings > Devices & services
    • Add integrations (or accept any that are discovered automatically)

Tip: Rename devices clearly and assign them to Areas/Rooms early - this makes dashboards and automations way easier later.

5: Do these “first setup” essentials

Some best practices when first setting up Home Assistant…

    • Update Home Assistant (Settings > System > Updates)
    • Set up Backups (Settings > System > Backups)

Troubleshooting

“homeassistant.local:8123” won’t open

Try these suggestions…

    • Wait 5–10 minutes on first boot.
    • Use the app to detect the server IP.
    • Open the IP directly: http://:8123
    • Try a different browser/device on the same network.
    • Check Ethernet lights on your router/switch and try another cable/port.
    • As a last resort, try factory resetting and starting the setup process again.

Safe shutdown (important)

Before unplugging power, shut down properly:

    • Settings > System > (3-dot menu) > Restart Home Assistant > Shut down system
    • Wait until all LEDs turn off before removing power.
