How to add Zigbee devices to Home Assistant Green
This guide shows you how to add Zigbee devices to Home Assistant using ZHA, with the Home Assistant ZBT-2 as your Zigbee coordinator.
What you need…
-
-
Home Assistant Green (or any Home Assistant install)
-
Home Assistant ZBT-2 plugged in (Zigbee coordinator)
-
A Zigbee device (sensor, plug, switch, bulb, etc.)
-
1: Set up the ZBT-2 in Home Assistant (ZHA)
If you haven’t set up the Zigbee integration in Home Assistant yet:
- Go to Settings > Devices & services
- Click Add integration
- Search Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA)
- When prompted to pick a radio/device, select the ZBT-2 (it usually appears automatically)
- Choose the radio type (this is usually correct by default). If it asks:
- Select EZSP (common for Silicon Labs based radios)
- Finish the setup
Once done, you’ll see Zigbee Home Automation listed under integrations.
2: Put Home Assistant into Zigbee pairing mode
With your Zigbee device at the ready…
- Go to Settings > Devices & services
- Click Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA)
- Click Add device
Home Assistant will now start searching for Zigbee devices.
3: Put your Zigbee device into pairing mode
This step depends on the device type and manufacturer (please consult the manual for your device if required). Here are the most common methods:
Zigbee sensors (motion, door, temperature, leak)
- Hold the pair/reset button for 5–10 seconds
- Look for a blinking LED (or quick flash pattern)
Zigbee smart plugs
- Hold the main button until the LED blinks
Zigbee bulbs
- Turn the power on/off 5–6 times until the bulb flashes (varies by brand)
Once your device is in pairing mode, Home Assistant should find it within 10–60 seconds as indicated in the web interface.
4: Name the device and assign it to a room
When the device is found and appears in the HA web interface:
- Give it a clear name (example: Hallway Motion)
- Pick an Area (example: Hallway)
- Click Finish
Your device is now ready for automations, dashboards, and scenes.for Zigbee devices.
Fixes if pairing doesn’t work
If your Zigbee device will not successfully pair, try these troubleshooting tips…
Pair close to the ZBT-2 antenna first
- For first pairing, keep the device within 1–2 metres of the ZBT-2.
- After pairing, you can move it to its final spot.
Factory reset the Zigbee device
If the device was previously paired to another Zigbee hub, it often won’t join until you do a full factory reset.
Factory resetting a Zigbee device can usually be achieved by long pressing (10 – 30 seconds) the pair/reset button. Consult your device manual if required.
Restart Zigbee pairing
- Cancel Add device
- Start Add device again
- Then retry pairing mode on the device
Build a stronger Zigbee mesh
Zigbee works best when you have a few mains-powered Zigbee routers around the house. These extend the network:
- Zigbee smart plugs
- In-wall switches
- Hardwired Zigbee modules
Battery devices (most sensors) do not extend the network.
