How to add Shelly Wi-Fi devices to a Wi-Fi network

Shelly Wi-Fi devices support multiple ways to connect to a Wi-Fi network, depending on your situation, device state and whether you want to join Shelly devices to the Shelly Cloud or just run them locally (i.e. via Home Assistant).

This guide explains all supported methods, when to use each one, and common pitfalls to avoid.

Method 1: Add to Wi-Fi using the Shelly App - Add via Wi-Fi (AP Scan)

This is the most common way to connect a Shelly device to your Wi-Fi network. This method will also add your Shelly device to your Shelly Cloud account.

    1. Shelly app: Install and open the Shelly Smart Control app
    2. Log in: Create or log in to your Shelly Cloud account
    3. Add device: Select the blue “PLUS” button in the bottom right corner
    4. AP Scan: Select “Add via Wi-Fi (AP Scan)
    5. Choose your Shelly device: Select your Shelly device from the list (or select “Any”)
    6. Select your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network: Select the Wi-Fi network (only 2.4GHz networks are supported) and enter your Wi-Fi SSID password (it is really important you get this right or your Shelly device will not add correctly)
    7. Complete setup: Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to complete setup – including naming your Shelly device and adding to a room

Important notes:

    • Detailed instructions: For more in-depth instructions and troubleshooting, please read our blog Shelly Wi-Fi Setup & Troubleshooting Guide.

    • Failed setup: If your Shelly device will not add to your Wi-Fi network using the instructions above, it is usually due to an incorrect Wi-Fi password or attempting to join a 5GHz network (only 2.4GHz is supported). Check these details and try again.

    • Factory reset: If all else fails, start again. Factory reset your Shelly device and try adding again.

    • Alternate setup methods: If you would prefer to run Shelly devices locally and not join a Shelly Cloud account, do not use this method – rather, use Method 3 below.

Method 2: Add to Wi-Fi using the Shelly App - Add via Bluetooth

This is the user-friendly way to connect a Shelly device to your Wi-Fi network. This method will also add your Shelly device to your Shelly Cloud account.

    2. Log in: Create or log in to your Shelly Cloud account
    3. Add device: Select the blue “PLUS” button in the bottom right corner

    • Alternate setup methods: If you would prefer to run Shelly devices locally and not join a Shelly Cloud account, do not use this method – rather, use Method 3 below.

Method 3: Add directly to Wi-Fi using a web interface (no Shelly Cloud)

This is the local and private way to connect a Shelly device to your Wi-Fi network. This method will not add your Shelly device to a Shelly Cloud account. Ideal for local setups (i.e. using Home Assistant etc).

    1. Power on: Make sure your Shelly device is powered on.
    2. Hotspot: Open your phone or PC Wi-Fi settings and connect directly to the Shelly device “Wi-Fi hotspot” (it will look something like “shelly-xxxxxx”
    3. Open a web browser: Enter http://192.168.33.1 in the address bar and press return (enter)
    4. Shelly Web Interface: You should now be in the Web Interface for your Shelly device where you can change settings and connect the Shelly device to your Wi-Fi network
    5. Open Wi-Fi settings: Go to Settings > Network Settings > Wi-Fi (depending on the device or firmware, your Shelly device Wi-Fi settings may be found somewhere else in the Web Interface – it shouldn’t be hard to find)
    6. Wi-Fi 1 settings: Select / enter your Wi-Fi network (only 2.4GHz networks are supported) and enter your Wi-Fi SSID password (it is really important you get this right or your Shelly device will not add correctly)
